"It is estimated that 61.3 million people aged between 20 and 79 years live with diabetes in India and this number is expected to increase to 101.2 million by 2030," said Dr. K Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil Nadu, at the '6th World Congress of Diabetes India' in Chennai.
The Governor formally inaugurated the four-day conference on diabetes in the presence of Dr. G Vijayakumar, Organizing Secretary, Diabetes India 2015, Dr. Shaukat Sadikot, President, Diabetes India 2015, Dr. Banshi Saboo, Congress Chairman, Diabetes India 2015, Dr. Krishna Seshadri, Scientific Chairman, Diabetes India 2015, Dr. S R Aravind, Hon. Secretary, Diabetes India 2015, renowned medical practitioners from across the globe and other senior government officials from the centre and state.
The 6th World Congress of Diabetes India in Chennai from April 9th to 12th will witness the participation of more than 200 national and 50 international speakers in the field of diabetes, and more than 3000 delegates from India and various other countries. The conference features various programs such as CME, orations, scientific sessions, debates, symposium, workshops, clinical case discussions and networking opportunities with experts on diabetes.
At the inauguration Dr. G Vijayakumar, Organizing Secretary, Diabetes Medicare Centre, Chennai, said, "There are more than 63 million diabetics in our country to treat and we do not have the sufficient number of specialists and doctors. Around 95% of patients have been treated by family physicians and primary care doctors. This conference has been organized to educate and train those practicing doctors so that they are well equipped to deliver appropriate healthcare to diabetic patients in India."
Dr. Shaukhat Sadikot, President, Diabetes India 2015, expressed that the main aim of this conference is to put forward the basic guidelines in the management of diabetes. He also expressed that this analytical-scientific conference will not only benefit the doctors and clinicians but also influence and equip the young researchers about the medical advancement in the field of diabetes. Dr Sadikot statistically pointed out that globally diabetes caused 5.1 million deaths in 2013. Every six seconds a person dies from diabetes and diabetes-related complications of the eye and nervous system is an emerging global economic burden.
Speaking at the conference Dr. Banshi Saboo, Congress Chairman, Diabetes India 2015, commented, "India has a vast population of 70 million subjects with diabetes, which is gradually heading to a tsunami of costly and dreaded complications. To address the issue, Diabetes India has joined hands with a group of diabetologists, endocrinologists and other physicians interested in diabetes along with renowned medical practitioners from across the globe to organize this scientific conference with the aim of providing affordable, accessible and most importantly accountable treatment to diabetic patients. This conference is an ideal platform for young researchers and experienced clinicians to present their research and clinical papers."
