The oceans are a vast reserve of medicinal herbs, fungi, bacteria and algae. Scientists and marine biotechnologists have been trying to unravel the deep mysteries inside the ocean for the benefit of mankind. However, compared to the other fields of biotechnology, the progress in marine biotechnology has been slow due to lack of awareness, policy frame work, human resources, instrumentation, funding and a few other factors. But the fast depleting land resources and the inavailability of land has led to considerable exploitation of marine living resources.

In this issue, the CSO series focuses on the work of two scientists: Dr S Raghukumar, MD, MykoTech, Goa, and Dr Dinabandhu Sahoo, scientist, University of Delhi, who are carrying out research in the field of marine biotechnology.
