The man's semen tested positive of the virus
An Indian national who had contracted the deadly Ebola infection in Liberia, landed in Delhi with a certificate claiming that he was cured of Ebola. The man has been kept under quarantine at the Airport Health Organization's quarantine center at Delhi Airport.
The 26-year-old man is the first confirmed patient to have landed in India. Though his blood samples tested negative for Ebola in three different tests conducted at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune and National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) in Delhi, ministry officials confirmed that his semen samples, which were analyzed on November 17, tested positive for the virus.
Authorities said that the man was quarantined as a matter of abundant caution to prevent the spread of the disease sexually. "Presence of virus in his semen samples may have the possibility of transmitting the disease through sexual route up to 90 days from time of clinical cure,"said the ministry in a statement.
The ministry further said , "Currently, this person does not have any symptoms of the disease. However, he would be kept under isolation... till such time his body fluids test negative and he is found medically fit to be discharged. It is reiterated that the person concerned is a treated and cured case of Ebola virus disease. No cases of relapse of Ebola have been documented."
