IMA is the largest organization of doctors in the world
The Indian Medical Association had recently announced the 57th Medicine Millennium International Awards in a three-day conference held in Kovalam.
Dr Robert Gallo, co-inventor of HIV, Dr Azad Moopen, chairman and managing director - Aster DM Healthcare and Dr Narendra Kumar, president of Association of Physicians of India were the proud recipients of the award this year.
Mr Oommen Chandy, Chief Minister of Kerala presented the awards to the eminent scientists marking their tremendous contribution towards medical sciences and developing medical facilities globally.
Dr Moopen received the award for making speciality care available across the globe. Dr Moopen has the largest chain of multi-specialty networks across the globe and over 200 establishments that consists of hospitals, medical centers, diagnostics, pharmacies that include a wide spectrum of healthcare services from primary care to quaternary care.
Acknowledging his immense contribution towards science and his the ultimate discovery of the HIV virus, the IMA conferred the Medical Millennium International Award upon Dr Robert Gallo, an American biomedical researcher and the director and co-founder of the Institute of Human Virology (IHV) at the University of Maryland, School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr Gallo is also a co-founder of biotechnology company Profectus BioSciences, and co-founder and scientific director of the Global Virus Network.
Dr Kumar, the president of American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI,) with nearly 100,000 doctors registered as members, was recognized for his immense contribution to the medical fraternity.
