Dr Lalji Singh gets JC Bose Fellowship
Dr Lalji Singh, director, Centre for Cellular and Molecular
Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad has been selected for the prestigious JC Bose National
Fellowship. The JC Bose Fellowship was instituted to give a boost to scientific
research in the country. The fellowship constituted by the Department of Science
and Technology (DST), Government of India, recognizes active, performing
scientists and engineers below the age of 60 years in the country for their
outstanding performance and
contributions.
Dr Kannan appointed Nagaland varsity VC
Dr Krishnamurthy Kannan, professor and founder dean, School of Biotechnology, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi has been appointed the vice-chancellor of Nagaland Central University. This appointment has taken him by surprise as he had not applied for the post. It is most likely that someone had recommended his name. Commenting on this development, Dr Kannan said, "I am feeling very happy and looking forward to this position in Nagaland which is blessed with an extremely rich biodiversity."
Sharing his future plans for the university, he said, "I will set up an engineering and management department along with a biotechnology department. The government has already allocated 400 acres of land for the expansion and resources will not be a constraint."
Dr Kannan, who is planning to join in early August, added, "I also want to create a biotechnology park for entrepreneurs, which will be different from the conventional park set-ups."
Dr Kannan is a trained protein chemist. He completed his Bachelor's degree from Delhi University in 1973 and his Masters in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai, two years later. From 1970-79, he was the recipient of the National Science Talent Search Scholarship. He went on to complete a doctorate degree in biochemistry from the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore, in 1979. Subsequently he went for higher studies in the Department of Biochemistry, Imperial College of Science and Technology, London.
The professor has earlier worked with premier public as well as private sector institutions like the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) at Hyderabad and Ranbaxy Ltd.

Prior to this, Rupinder was with BD BioSciences, leading their reagents team as business manager. A gold medalist from Punjab University Chandigarh, he spent his initial years with Lupin labs and gained about six years of research experience in molecular biology and immunology.
