Serum Institute of India to set up research centre for infectious diseases in Hyderabad

Serum Institute of India (SII), the largest vaccine manufacturer, has announced establishment of Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Infectious Diseases and Pandemic Preparedness in Hyderabad. 
 
The discussion for developing this CoE started during the World Economic Forum in May 2022, with Minister K.T. Rama Rao, Minister for Municipal Administration & Urban Development, Industries & Commerce, and Information Technology, Government of Telangana. However, the official announcement came in during a virtual meeting, held on 19th February 2023.
 
The CoE is being set up for providing the community with a centralised location for information, resources & support during times of public health emergencies. It will provide updates on current epidemics, as well as offer resources & support to those who have been affected.
 
"The opening of this Centre of Excellence marks a significant step forward in our efforts to protect the health and well-being of our community. By centralising our resources and expertise, we can ensure a quick and effective response to any public health emergency", said the Minister.
 
Principal Secretary of Industries and Commerce Department, Jayesh Ranjan and  Director, Lifesciences, Shakthi Nagappan were present during the virtual meeting.
