Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute of Engineering and Technology is affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad. The department of biotechnology was established in the year 2002 with an intake of 30 students. This course is aimed to explore and exploit biological resources, and produce varied range of useful products.  The department offers a BSc course. 
Ninety students were enrolled for the academic year 2008-2009.  At present, there are 13 full-time faculty members with seven members having an experience of more than five years. The department has laboratories using engineering technology in bio-chemistry and cell biology lab, microbiology lab, instrumental methods of analysis lab, plant tissue culture lab, bio-process lab-I, bio-process engineering lab-II, molecular biology and genetic engineering lab, downstream processing lab, immunology lab and bioinformatics lab.
The institute also comes up with journals both national and international.
It also brings in visiting faculty members and at present there are four faculty members with a work experience of more than four years. The industry has been sponsoring some of its projects.
