Dr Jitendra Singh announces India's first engineering biology bachelor course

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology Dr Jitendra Singh has announced the launch of India's first Engineering Biology Bachelor of Science course. He described it as an important step towards creating an independent and sovereign biotechnology ecosystem capable of meeting the long-term scientific, healthcare and economic aspirations of the country.

Speaking at the launch of the roadmap for "Making India a Leading Bioeconomy Power by 2035", the Minister said that Engineering Biology will be a foundational subject for the next phase of India's bioeconomy and it will be just like computer science drove the digital revolution.

"The IITs have already started sending proposals for interdisciplinary programmes (courses designed across multiple disciplines) in collaboration with medical institutions, which shows the growing synergy of engineering, biology and healthcare", the Minister said.

Announcing the new curriculum, Dr Jitendra Singh said, "We have to create our own independent, sovereign ecosystem. This initiative will be the first of its kind in the country and will create a new generation of professionals who will be able to work at the confluence of engineering, life sciences, medicine and emerging technologies."
