Prof. Umesh V. Waghmare takes charge as new India DST Secretary

A distinguished theoretical physicist at JNCASR

Prof. Umesh V. Waghmare, President of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru, has been appointed as Secretary, Department of Science & Technology (DST) by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

A distinguished theoretical physicist, Prof. Waghmare graduated with the Institute Silver Medal and B.Tech in Engineering Physics from IIT Bombay (1990). He earned his Ph.D. from Yale University (1996) and completed postdoctoral research at Harvard University (1996–2000).

He worked as a post-doctoral research associate in physics department at Harvard University before joining Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research in 2000, where he is presently a Professor in the Theoretical Sciences Unit and the Dean of Academic Affairs.

Prof. Waghmare received the India Citation Award-2012 from the Thomson Reuters Research Excellence, and a JC Bose National Fellowship in 2012.

In 2015, he received the Infosys Prize in Engineering and Computer Science. He is a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad and the Indian National Science Academy, and presently a Secretary of the Indian Academy of Sciences.
