Dr Rajesh Gokhale has been appointed as the Secretary, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), India. He succeeds Dr Renu Swarup who retires on October 31, 2021.
Dr Gokhale is currently a professor at the Department of Biology, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune and is known for his studies on the metabolic diversity of pathogens. He is credited with the discovery of a family of long-chain fatty acyl-AMP Ligases.
Dr Gokhale is a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Science Academy and the National Academy of Sciences. He has been awarded Swarnajayanti Fellowship, Dr Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the National bio Science award for career development and the Infosys prize in Life Sciences.
