"Through R&D network projects, support is being given to Biohydrogen, Biobutanol and algal bio-fuels," stated the union minister of state for science and technology, Dr Jitendra Singh recently in the parliament.

The DBT has established three Bio-energy Centers including DBT-ICT Center for Energy Biosciences, Institute of Chemical Technology, Matunga, Mumbai, Maharashtra; DBT-IOC Centre for Advanced Bio-energy Research, R&D Center, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Faridabad, Haryana and DBT-ICGEB Center for Advanced Bio-Energy Research, International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi.

The main objectives of the above three Bio-energy Centers are to conduct multi-disciplinary bio-energy research involving biology, chemical science and material science; develop technology for second generation bio-fuels; deploy bio-fuel technologies with existing capabilities to scale up and to perform cutting edge research using Synthetic and Systems biology approaches towards the development of novel technology for bio-fuel production.
