Aligarh Muslim University’s interdisciplinary biotechnology unit (IBU) was established in 1985. Biotechnology was conceived as an inter-departmental and inter-faculty teaching and research program and hence teachers from different departments are actively involved in conducting the MSc course. The MSc biotechnology program is funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India.
IBU has an active PhD program and a good infrastructure which helps in teaching, training and conducting research works in biotechnology.  The IBU also has an active distributed information sub-center established by the DBT under the biotechnology information network system in 1988-89. The center acts as a bioinformatics network system for providing information on topic of relevance to biotechnology and related areas of protein folding and design, protein structure and protein engineering.
