IIT-D launches national translational platform for advancing medical device and diagnostics innovation

Provides an end-to-end infrastructure for the development, validation, sterilisation, and packaging of medical devices

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has announced the inauguration of a state-of-the-art CNC and Sterilisation & Packaging lab at mPragati, IIT Delhi, a national translational platform dedicated to advancing medical device and diagnostics innovation.

Dr Rajiv Bahl, Secretary to Government of India, Department of Health Research and Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research, inaugurated the facilities.

The CNC facility provides state-of-the-art precision machining for medical implants, surgical instruments, dental devices, and diagnostic components — enabling indigenous manufacturing with certified biocompatible materials.

With advanced multi-axis machining, Swiss-type turning, and high-speed milling, the CNC facility supports both patient-specific and standardised components. It bridges a critical gap in India’s MedTech value chain by reducing reliance on imports and accelerating translation of prototypes into clinically deployable products.

The Sterilization & Packaging Facility provides an end-to-end infrastructure for the development, validation, sterilisation, and packaging of medical devices, diagnostics, and biomedical products. The facility is equipped with advanced sterilisation systems, including Ethylene Oxide (EtO) and steam autoclaves, precision device assembly workstations, automated reagent dispensing systems, stability chambers for reagent and product shelf-life validation, a high-precision laser welding system, laser marking, and secure vacuum packaging integrated with batch coding and product traceability.

Complementing these capabilities is a comprehensive biological and molecular testing infrastructure comprising thermal cyclers, real-time PCR systems, Trans-Blot systems, gel electrophoresis and gel documentation systems, high-speed ultracentrifuges, HPLC, CO₂ incubators, fluorescence microscopy, biosafety cabinets for mammalian cell culture, and ultra-low temperature storage.
