In a historic recognition, Dr V. Mohan, India’s foremost diabetologist and Chairman of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, has been named the first recipient of the EASD Diabetes Global Impact Prize 2025 by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).
This prestigious international honour, being conferred for the first time, celebrates Dr Mohan’s decades-long contribution to clinical and translational diabetes research—work that has tangibly impacted the health and well-being of millions across the globe.
The award will be formally presented during the 61st Annual Meeting of the EASD in Vienna, Austria, in September 2025, where Dr Mohan will also deliver the inaugural Diabetes Global Prize Lecture.
The award committee's unanimous decision reflects the global footprint of Dr Mohan’s work—ranging from path-breaking research to grassroots outreach, and from public health policy advocacy to training a new generation of diabetes care professionals.
Starting his journey in diabetes research at the young age of 18, Dr Mohan has published over 1,780 research papers that have collectively garnered more than 232,000 citations, with an exceptional H-index of 167—the highest for any medical doctor in India. He is widely recognised for setting new benchmarks in diabetes care, even while working from a privately funded centre.
Beyond his academic achievements, Dr Mohan has played a pivotal role in training thousands of doctors, nutritionists, and diabetes educators, expanding the reach of high-quality diabetes care to underserved regions. He is also a respected author and public health advocate, continuously striving to make science accessible and actionable for everyday lives.
