Shree Manibhai Virani & Smt. Navalben Virani Science College has been deemed as a "STAR College" by DBT and a "College with Potential for Excellence" by the UGC. The Star College recognition by DBT is intended to allow students to have better access to specialized infrastructure and an improved curriculum with hands on experience. While the department is affiliated to Saurashtra University, the mode of admission is through a common entrance test conducted by the institute followed by a personal interview. In addition to offering MSc biotechnology, the institute also offers certificate courses in plant tissue culture, bioinformatics, plant molecular genetics, and biotechnology that are also affiliated to Saurasthra University. The department has also been granted two international patents based on research conducted on campus. Since 2010 the, department has been awarded industry sponsored projects worth `22 lakh and government sponsored projects to a tune of `201.55 lakh.
