Syngene
focuses on innovating R&D services
Syngene International, a
subsidiary of the biopharma major, Biocon, is a leading player in
custom research.

Syngene International Private Limited (Syngene) along with its clinical
services arm has clocked revenues of Rs 224.60 crore in fiscal year
2008-09 as against Rs 160 crore in 2007-08.
Syngene conducts high value R&D in early stage drug discovery
and development for a diverse global clientele. From early stage
discovery and process development through to cGMP manufacturing,
Syngene provides customized R&D services to pharmaceutical and
biotechnology companies on a strong platform of confidentiality and
intellectual property protection. Established in 1994, Syngene was
India’s first custom research organization to receive special
export status by the Government of India. Over the past 14 years, the
company has successfully partnered with leading players in the global
pharmaceutical industry across a range of challenging programs, from
discovery to supply of complex development compounds.
Syngene, since inception, has developed skills in synthetic chemistry
and molecular biology, process chemistry and cell line services. The
company is also leveraging the convergence of IT and biotech. In 2007,
Syngene entered into a research partnership with Bristol-Myers Squibb
(BMS). Through this partnership, the company provides R&D
services for discovery and early drug development to BMS. In same
partnership Syngene opened a fully-dedicated research and development
facility for Bristol-Myers Squibb in Biocon Park, Bangalore. The
2,00,000 sq.ft. facility at Biocon Park, dedicated to help advance
Bristol Myers Squibb’s work in discovery and early drug
development, is currently occupied by 270 scientists.
The facility will house 360 scientists by the end of the year and could
accommodate as many as 450 scientists in future.
In another development, Syngene International has deepened its
relationship with DuPont Crop Protection and signed up as its alliance
partner. The company will now cover a broad range of R&D
technical capabilities to support DuPont’s discovery
pipeline. Already a research service provider to DuPont in discovery
chemistry and biology, Syngene will now provide integrated research
services through its One Box model.
