Health Ministry strengthens safety monitoring of medicines, medical devices and transplant procedures

Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilizers, Anupriya Patel has launched the 7th National Formulary 2026, a guidance document for hospitals in India for safety monitoring and reporting of adverse events related to medical devices, and the ADR-PVPI 2.0 mobile app for iOS users, a secure and popular mobile operating system, at the 6th National Drug Monitoring Week event organised by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC).

Adverse events due to medicines can be reported online through the official mobile app developed under the Indian Pharmacovigilance Programme. The 7th edition of the National Formulary is also available digitally through the National Formulary of India Online.

The Minister also announced the approval of India's Biovigilance Programme, as part of the expansion of India's patient safety framework.

Under this, IPC will play a leading role in strengthening the reporting, evaluation, monitoring and prevention of adverse effects associated with drugs and biological products used in organ and tissue transplantation, including organs and tissues donated to donors and recipients.

Pharmacovigilance, materiovigilance and biovigilance initiatives will together strengthen safety monitoring of medicines, medical devices and transplant procedures.

Anupriya Patel stated that approximately 1,150 Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) reporting centres operate in government and private hospitals and medical colleges across the country to report side effects of medications or drugs, as well as medical device monitoring facilities. She added that the government plans to expand these facilities to primary healthcare centres.
