Dr. Tehemton Udwadia gets Padma Bhushan

Eight personalities get Padma Shri for Medicine


Union government of India honours Dr. Tehemton Erach Udwadia, Parsi Indian surgeon and gastroenterologist, considered by many as the father of laparoscopic surgery in India with Padma Bhushan. Dr Udwadia is a general surgeon at two Mumbai hospitals, Breach Candy Hospital and Hinduja Hospital and is the founder president of the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo-Surgeons. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2006, for his contributions to Indian medicine.

Meanwhile Suniti Solomon, Indian physician and microbiologist who pioneered AIDS research and prevention in India after having diagnosed the first Indian AIDS cases in Chennai in 1985 was conferred Padma Shri award by the union government. Eminent personalities from different fields like public service, sports, medicine, science and technology and entertainment will be awarded the Padma Shri awards by President Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri and are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
