Set up in 2002, the Department of Biotechnology at Jaypee Institute of Information Technology (JIIT)  has been successful in carving a niche for itself on the national biotech education map.

The state-of-the-art campus of JIIT is located over a total built-up area of over 745,272 sq.m. and comprises smart buildings, with internet and Wi-Fi connectivity including environmentally-conditioned academic block. The biotech department offers a four-year BTech in biotechnology as well as a five-year integrated course  in biotechnology. A balanced mix of faculty drawn from both academia and industry with rich R&D exposure both in India and abroad contributes to the department is academic excellence. The Oxford College of Science is ranked No.12 in this year's survey. The Department of Biotechnology at Oxford is headed by Dr Vedamurthy and offers MSc and MPhil courses in biotechnology. The courses are affiliated to Bangalore University and recognized by the Government of Karnataka. The department provides comprehensive training in application of biotechnological skills to produce goods and services required by the society and industry.  The department of biotechnology has 19 full-time faculty members and 10 visiting/part-time faculties, of which four members are from the industry.

The department has published 21 scientific papers in national and international journals. The biotech department has recently shifted to a new campus with excellent infrastructure and lab facilities. The college has invested over 95 lakh in for  laboratory infrastructure,  lab equipments, consumables and books in 2009-10. Ten labs are available for biotechnology students.

The School of Life Sciences at Jaipur National University offers various post-graduate programs in biotechnology, microbiology, bioinformatics and biochemistry. Besides offering  BTech in biotechnology at graduation level and  MSc biotechnology (general and integrated)  the school also offers MPhil and PhD in biotechnology. The integrated programs in biotechnology, microbial technology and bioinformatics have been formulated to provide a broad-based curriculum with interdisciplinary approach as well as in-depth understanding of effective and innovative practices.

The school has well-furnished and fully-equipped laboratories, an aircooled and fully-computerized library, and well-trained, talented and dedicated faculties.
Students actively participate in research activities at the post-graduate level. The research activities (projects) are specified for each student, having collaboration with a specific industry.14

The Oxford College of Engineering, has started offering courses in biotechnology from 2003 by  opening the Department of Biotechnology. The college is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.

The biotech department gained accreditation status from National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi,  in 2009. Initially the students' intake was 30 and increased to 60 in academic year 2008-09. In all, 142 students are studying BE. Eighteen students are doing MTech in bioinformatics, which was started in academic year 2009-10. The department has two research fellows doing PhDs and has 16 full-time and 10 part-time faculties. Of whom, five are from industry background.

The department is successfully running a R&D Centre approved by VTU since the year 2008. Under this program, several innovative projects are being carried out.

The Department of Biotechnology at Bannari Amman Institute of Technology was established in 2003. The four-year BTech in Industrial Biotechnology (IBT) under Anna University, Chennai, was started in 2003-04 with an intake capacity of 30 students per batch. The IBT program was renamed by Anna University, Chennai, as BTech Biotechnology (BT) from 2004 onwards. The department has increased the intake from 30 to 60 in 2007.

The department has 16 full-time faculty members and 19 scientific publications in national and international journals to its credit. The institute is an active research center and has developed two products between 2007 and 2010. The department has externally-funded research projects worth 65 lakh from the government in various areas of biotechnology and industry-sponsored projects worth 425.69 lakh between 2009 and 2010.

The institute has 11 laboratories dedicated to biotech students, each lab accommodating more than 30 students.

Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute of Engineering and Technology's Department of Biotechnology was established in 2002 with an intake of 30 students.  The institute is affiliated to the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad. The department offers BTech in biotechnology, MSc (Ag) molecular biology & biotechnology, MVSc in molecular biology & biotechnology, and PhD  in molecular biology & biotechnology. There are 10 faculty members and all of them have an experience in teaching for more than five years. Out of these 10 members, four of them are PhD holders. The department has five visiting faculties, all of them having a teaching experience of more than five years and are from industry background. 

 Between June 1, 2007, and May  31, 2010, seven research papers were published in the international journals.  Four products developed by the  institute were transferred to the industry in the same period.17

Vydehi institute of Biotech Sciences (VIBS) was established in 2003 with the aim of imparting quality education in biotechnology and related fields. The Institute is affiliated to Bangalore University and recognized by the Government of Karnataka. The institute has built up a strong reputation within seven years of its existence.
The biotech department offers MSc  in biotechnology that in-turn has a total intake capacity of 50 students.  The department has six full-time faculties and one visiting faculty. The school presently has three labs, each lab having a capacity to accommodate 20 students.

The college library has over 11,000 books. Audiovisual facilities like OHP and Slide Projector – TV/V.C.R./CD texts available at central library.

In terms of capital expenditure, the cost on subscribing biotech-related books between June 2007 and May 2010, came up to 10,000  while the cost incurred on biotech-related journals between 2003 and 2005 came up to 20 lakh. Cost on consumables came up to 25 lakh.

The MSc biotechnology course has an intake capacity of 52 students. There are 18 full-time faculty members specific to biotech area, with nine members having a work experience of more than five years and six having a work experience greater than two years.

Three research papers were published in national journals and two in international journals between June 1, 2007 and May  31, 2010.

In terms of total capital expenditure, the total cost incurred on subscribing biotech-related books between June 2009 and May 2010 came up to 1.28 lakh while the cost incurred on subscribing biotech-related journals came up to 35,000. The cost on laboratory equipments came up to 2 lakh while the cost  of consumables like reagents and biologicals came up to 25 lakh.

Presently, there are two biotech laboratories allocated solely to biotech students with each lab having the capacity to accommodate up to  20 students.

Between June 1, 2007, and May 31, 2010, five scientific research papers were published in international journals.  In terms of total capital expenditure the total cost spent on subscribing biotech-related books came up to 2.52 lakh.20

Bangalore-based Acharya Institute of Technology offers BE, MSc and PhD programs in biotechnology. The total intake for BE course is 25 and the course has been approved by AICTE. The institute admits students as per the prevailing rules and regulations of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, Karnataka. The biotechnology program at Acharya makes the students not only well-versed in basic knowledge but also specializes them in applied aspects of biotechnology. A specialized add-on program in bioinformatics and drug designing is offered to enhance the value of the programs offered by the department of biotechnology. The department has published 22 national and 14 international scientific publications. The department attracted 20 lakh worth industry-sponsored projects and 50 lakh worth government-sponsored projects between 2007 and 2010.

The institute has state-of-the-art laboratories. The department has invested over 39 lakhs in lab infrastructure in 2009-2010. The institute has five laboratories dedicated to biotechnology.

Arunai Engineering College was established in 1993. The college offers BTech in biotechnology that is affiliated to Anna University Chennai, Tamil Nadu, with a total intake of 56. The biotech department has 14 full-time faculties and three part-time faculties.

The institute has received government funding of 6.1 lakh and industry-sponsored projects of 2.5 lakh between 2007 and 2010. The department has filed one Indian patent so far.The department has nine biotech laboratories, and has invested over 74.75 lakh in academic year 2009-10 on lab infrastructure and books/journals. The institute also earned a royalty income of 2.35 lakh in 2009-10 as against 1.23 lakh in 2007-08. The institute is working closely with the industry.

The college has been awarded ISO 9001:2000 certification from DNV Netherlands in recognition of its International Quality Standards in technical education.23

Dr DY Patil University, which has been conferred a deemed university status, offers courses in biotechnology and bioinformatics through its institute namely, the Dr DY Patil Institute of Biotechnology & Bioinformatics (DYPBBI), which was started in 2004. DYPBBI is accredited by NAAC with 'A' grade. The institute houses separate departments of molecular biology, biochemistry, industrial biotechnology, bioinformatics and plant and animal tissue culture with highly qualified faculty and well equipped laboratories. DYPBBI is extensively used for intensive research by the hosts and neighboring and national institutions for research collaborations.

Between June 1, 2007 and May  31, 2010, two scientific research papers were published in national journals, while four were published in international journals. For academic year 2009-10, 30 students were inducted for the MSc in biotechnology course.26
