Bannari Amman Institute of Technology is an autonomous institute which is affiliated to Anna University and approved by AICTE, for its BTech and MTech courses. The department has three government sponsored projects worth 19.3 lakh to its credit. Additionally an equal amount has been sanctioned for three more projects.

The institute houses a technology business incubator which is a joint venture with DST and was established in 2007. Industry- oriented experiments and mini projects are also a part of the curriculum to build-up the students research skills. The host of programs introduced by the department to improve the employability of students include technical skill development, training in software programing languages along with discussions to help weaker students.

Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute (NBA accredited) is affiliated to AICTE and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU). All of the 10 faculty members at the department of biotechnology have a teaching experience of more than five years.

As a result of in-house research carried out at the institute, five Indian patents have been filed. The institute has bagged 19 lakh worth of industry projects since 2009. Government sponsored research was also carried out with grants amounting to 22 Lakh. Leading companies such as Nuziveedu Seeds, Mahyco, BioAxis DNA research center and many others participated in campus recruitment at the institute, that resulted in 20 students receiving job offers.

13-Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College for Women, Karnataka
Scores on bioinfo proficiency


One of the most important change in the last academic year for the college was the addition of the diploma course as a part of the biotech (BT) finishing school program in Karnataka under the domains of pre-clinical and clinical research, biostatistics and data management, and bioinformatics and rational drug design. The college has also been chosen as a part of the prestigious DBT 'star college program'. Through this program the institute received funds worth 7 lakh for improving infrastructure and providing better facilities to students as well as the faculty members.

The MSc biotechnology course is affiliated to Bangalore University and last year saw the 14 students opting for it. Additionally the bioinformatics infrastructure lab has been recognized by the DBT.

14-TERI University, Delhi
Promoting research programs


The department of biotechnology at the TERI University offers both masters and doctoral programs. The department, presently offers MSc in plant biotechnology and PhD in molecular biology and biotechnology. The MSc program in plant biotechnology was initiated with funding from the DBT. Students opting for the master's or doctoral program can expect an academically rigorous and interdisciplinary environment and significant emphasis on laboratory work. In the academic year 2011-12, out of 103 applications received by the department, 15 students were selected for the postgraduate courses through the university's own selection process.

The faculty at the department is involved in doing research in the areas of microbial genetic analysis, molecular biology, biofuels and other areas.

Kristu Jayanti college is accredited by NAAC with an A grade. The trend is such that there is an almost equal number of students from urban and rural background at Kristu Jayanti College.

The faculty members of the college have published eight books along with 12 research papers in national and international journals each. The college has received government funds worth 4.3 lakh for its projects. The institute, so far has applied for one international patent and also developed and transferred one product to the industry. There are a total of 10 labs for the students, of which six are devoted towards research. RV College of Engineering offers a multitude of courses in the biotechnology space affiliated to different universities. It is affiliated to Visveswaraya Technological University (VTU) for its BTech and MTech biotechnology.

The institute offers a PhD biotechnology degree as well, and is affiliated to different universities such as VTU, Kuvempu University, Mangalore University, MGR University, and Tumkur University for a specified number of seats. The School of Life Sciences at Jaipur National University offers various post-graduate programs in four areas-biotechnology, microbiology, bioinformatics, and biochemistry. Besides offering BTech and MSc biotechnology (general and integrated), the school also offers MPhil and PhD at the higher levels in the area of biotechnology. In 2011-12, the number of students admitted for the MSc course collectively stood at 37.

The school has 26 laboratories, an air-conditioned and fully computerized library, and well-trained, talented and dedicated faculty. Since 2000, close to 78 research papers have been published in the national journals and 66 published in international journals.

A rising star in bio education


Department of Botany is an integral part of Khallikote College, which is a century old premier institution in Odisha. The department of botany started a post-graduate diploma and masters program in biotechnology in 2001 and 2002 respectively.

In the academic year 2011-12, 15 students were admitted to MSc biotechnology course. The department has so far published 28 research papers in the national journals and four in international journals. Though not very old, this department flourished within a short period and now is considered to be one of the leading bioscience schools in Odisha. It is being considered by DBT, for granting Star College Status in Life Sciences.

19-SRM University, Tamil Nadu
Attracting students to portals


SRM University is an AICTE approved university. Its BTech biotechnology course is very popular among the student community, having received 1,602 applications for the same, of which only 193 students were admitted. Last year also saw eight students being admitted to the PhD program.

At the university, there are 27 full-time faculty members with more than five years of teaching experience of which 11 are PhD holders. The institute has a good track record for its research papers as evidenced by the 130 papers published in international journals and 33 in national journals. The college has secured government funds worth 40.25 lakh. SRM lays a lot of emphasis on the final year projects of students thus aiding them in their future careers as well. There are eight labs dedicated for the biotech department where 30 students can be accommodated in each. Post their graduation, most students opted for higher studies last year of which 12 qualified for the CSIR NET examination.

20-PES Institute of Technology, Karnataka
Provides hands-on training


The department of biotechnology at People's Education Society Institute of Technology (PESIT) mainly focuses on four domains namely: biochemical process engineering; molecular biotechnology; medical and environmental biotechnology; bioinformatics; and computational biology. Currently 17 students are pursuing their PhD at the institute with three of them securing admission last year. The PhD program along with the BTech courses are affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technical University.

One of the distinguishing features at PESIT is the highly trained faculty, all of who possess more than five years of experience. PESIT is also a part of the BT Finishing school program since its inception last year. The management was sanctioned a grant of Rs.1crore from the department of IT, BT, S&T, Government of Karnataka for the development of the infrastructure. PESIT is also offering a PG diploma in pre-clinical, clinical research, biostatistics and data management.

Sponsored projects galore


The institute has introduced PG diploma courses in plant tissue culture and micropropagation, plant genomics, genetic transformation and seed marker analysis, nutraceuticals and food processing under the BT Finishing school program. The admission was carried out through an all India Karnataka Biotechnology Aptitude Test (K-BAT) after which 10 students were admitted over last year. The institute also conducts a MSc Clinical Research course which is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, wherein ten students were admitted last year.

The college is recognized by Bangalore University as a research center for the PhD program. The institute has 15 faculty members and additionally 12 visiting faculty members with more than five years of experience.

The department of bioscience and biotechnology at Banasthali University offers various courses at different levels in the area of biotechnology. These include BTech in Biotechnology, and MSc in Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology. Besides that, PhD course is also available for the students willing to go for higher research. In the year 2011-12 the department enrolled 104 students for its BTech program, 86 students for MSc Biotechnology and 50 for MSc Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology. There are a total of 29 full-time faculty members at the department. The department, since May 2003 has published over 80 research papers in journals of national repute and 136 research papers in international journals. During 2011-12, the department has attracted four major research projects and is also involved in collaborative research with local institutions. Dr DY Patil University, a deemed university, offers courses in biotechnology and bioinformatics through its institute, the Dr DY Patil Institute of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics (DYPBBI), which was started in 2004. DYPBBI is accredited by NAAC with 'A' grade. The institute houses separate departments of molecular biology, biochemistry, industrial biotechnology, bioinformatics and plant and animal tissue culture with highly qualified faculty and well equipped laboratories.

The department won two research grants. It received a grant of 64 lakh from DST and a grant valued at 2.9 crore from Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency for a bioremediation project.

Bangalore-based India Academy Degree College is affiliated to Bharathiar University for its MSc and MTech in biotechnology courses. The institute is ISO 9000-2008 certified and also has NAAC accreditation with an 'A' grade. Last year, 60 students were admitted into the MSc course. The teaching department has over 14 faculty members, with eight of them either possessing a PhD or DSc. Chandigarh College of Technology (CCT) is one of the institutions of Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC), affiliated to PunjaBTechnical University.
