Biosuppliers industry clocks Rs5,324 crore

Depreciation of the rupee against greenback and subsequent increase in import costs pull down the growth of biosuppliers industry to 14.99%

The Indian Biotech industry is one of the key demand drivers for the technology providers (biosuppliers) whose major clientele are the R&D labs and manufacturing establishments. Though the biotech industry registered 18.5 percent growth over FY 2010-11, the biosuppliers industry recorded only a 15 percent growth. The biosuppliers in 2010-11 had registered a growth of 18.93 percent, but that growth rate declined during 2011-12 to 14.99 percent and the biosuppliers industry clocked 5,324 crore in revenues as against previous year's revenue of 4,630 crore.

The decline in the growth rate is attributed to depreciation of the rupee against greenback and subsequent increase in import costs. This has not only affected the overall revenues but made the market all the more competitive.

The biosuppliers industry has registered a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 32.62 percent during 2002-2006 and in the next five year period the industry witnessed a CAGR of 11.17 percent. The biosuppliers industry has registered a CAGR of 24.61 percent for the period 2002-11.

Though the biosuppliers industry has over 150 companies, multinationals have strong presence in India as they have been offering high quality products and services. The multinational companies (though less in number) account for over 73 percent of the total biosuppliers industry revenues and the rest of the revenues is generated by the local players (mainly the distributors).

While most of the principal companies have been generating an average revenue of over 200 crore from the life sciences business operations in India, the local companies (mainly distributors) have been generating average revenues of 40 crore with only a handful of them generating over 100 crore.

In the North, Agilent Technologies is leading the table with 365.7 crore followed by Becton Dickenson with 248.40 crore and RFCL with 231.5 crore. In the West, Thermo Fisher Scientific is leading the table with Rs 598 crore followed by local play HiMedia Laboratories with Rs 286 crore and Shimadzu Analytical with 201 crore. In the South, Waters is the leading player with 458.5 crore followed by Invitrogen Bioservices India with 234 crore and Sartorius India with 195 crore.

Last year, it was observed that most government research institutions did not make any large purchases citing the lack of sufficient funds. However with greater fund allocation for research, in the 12th five year plan, the industry hopes that this trend will be reversed in the coming years.

  • Thermo Fisher Scientific tops the list with 598 crore
  • Waters India stands second and Agilent Technologies is the third largest technology provider in the country.
  • Top 20 companies contribute 73 percent of the total revenues
  • The biosuppliers industry has registered CAGR of 32.62 percent during 2002-06 and a CAGR of 11.17 percent during 2007-11.

Some of the leading technology providers in the industry couldn't participate in this year's survey because of technnical and policy related issues.
