Delhi National Capital Region (NCR) has been one of the major hunting grounds for the biotech sector. Since the NCR is well connected to the national capital, it provides companies an extra edge over other regions. Haryana and UP have been proactively involved in getting the ball rolling for the sector as both states share
boundaries with the national capital. Cities such as Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad have been spinning their wheels to get a major share of this sector. But it has not been a smooth ride for these cities.
UTTAR PRADESH (NOIDA, GHAZIABAD)
Department of Biotechnology, Government of India has provided great impetus to states in the form of infrastructure and human resource. While southern states and Maharashtra have utilised biotechnology in health care and agriculture besides attracting Indian and overseas investments, UP has not been able to apply biotechnology for its development. The state has nevertheless achieved significant expertise through R&D institutions, human resource and agricultural diversity.
According to the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Uttar Pradesh official, to harness benefits of biotechnology for the prosperity of the state, the state government has chartered a biotech Policy. The state would encourage growth of R&D development of manpower and resources in key areas like bioinformatics, plant and animal genetics by networking with the existing institutions, universities and medical institutes. It would also set up centres for excellence in human genetics, applied biotechnology, transgenic plants and animals, safety evaluation of biotech products.
